Some shoppers are understandably concerned about the safety of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, but a bit of research reveals that after extensive development and testing, hydrogen cell vehicles are just about as safe as traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. And when you look at the Toyota Mirai MPG ratings, it’s clear they leave a much smaller carbon footprint as well.

How Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles Work

The development of hydrogen fuel is an extensive process, and even when it gets into your car there’s still a ways to go before it develops power. Essentially, this is the process of how the hydrogen fuel cell powertrain works:

  • Hydrogen gas is taken from a pressurized tank
  • Hydrogen reacts with a catalyst, which take electrons from the hydrogen
  • These electrons are channelled into the electric motor and back into the fuel cell
  • Leftover electrons fuse with oxygen, which exits the car as water

Safety of Hydrogen Cell Vehicles

While some people may worry about the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle safety, the fact is that scientists have developed huge improvements for hydrogen fuel technology over the years. In fact, there’s significantly more energy and explosive potential in a gasoline fuel tank than in a hydrogen cell fuel tank. Also, there are various sensors that are taken on hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to manage possible leaks, including:

  • Alarms
  • Seal valves
  • Seal fuel lines

Toyota Mirai MPG
